PRIVATE SECTOR CALLS FOR FULL TIME LIVERPOOL LEADER

Liverpool needs a full time political leader if it is to take full advantage of its year as the European Capital of Culture, and the recent regeneration and renaissance of the city, according to a survey undertaken by private sector champion, Downtown Liverpool In Business (DLIB).

DLIB surveyed 100 Liverpool business leaders and found that there is overwhelming support for the idea of a full time political leader for Liverpool.

DLIB Chairman Frank McKenna commented.
" A massive 86 % of those polled believe that the time has come for Liverpool to be led by a full time politician. The idea of an elected mayor has been ongoing for several years, but there is an opportunity within the current Liverpool City Council structure to appoint a full time leader.

" That person should be properly remunerated for their duties and be able to devote the necessary time to lead the city at the most important time in Liverpool's modern history.

" Warren Bradley appears to have adopted a business focused and business - friendly agenda, but is it realistic to expect him to deliver this, and drive forward the many other policy areas of the council, whilst also having to work as a fire fighter?

" The leading of Liverpool is a 24/7 job, and the business community are appealing to the Council to find the ways and means of making that happen in the current structure."

Mr. McKenna added that this issue would be at the top of the agenda of the forthcoming 'Liverpool Means Business' conference, which DLIB is hosting in association with the Northwest Development Agency on 21st June.

" The conference will provide an opportunity for a wider business audience to comment on the proposal, and Warren Bradley, along with Local Government Minister Phil Woolas, will be along to hear those views first hand."
