COUNCIL LEADERS COMMENDED AS BUSINESSES REJECT C-CHARGE PLANS
CHARGING is not the solution to Liverpool’s congestion problems, according to the city’s business community.
In a survey of business leaders, more than 70 per cent said they were opposed to the introduction of a London-style congestion charge in the city.
Instead, the city’s private sector believes that improved management of the Big Dig, better city centre parking and a new approach to public transport could drastically ease Liverpool’s traffic problems.
Frank McKenna, of Downtown Liverpool in Business, which carried out the poll, said the result was a resounding rejection of congestion charging.
“These results clearly indicate that there is no appetite for congestion charging among the Liverpool business community,” said Mr McKenna.
“In that regard, Liverpool City Council is to be congratulated in its resistance to central government pressure to introduce such a measure.
“Our members have been consistently critical of the poor management of the Big Dig, the lack of city centre car parking and the fact that we still have a significant number of empty buses running around on a daily basis.
“By addressing these issues, traffic congestion would be eased.
“Additional charges on the motorist may be an easy and obvious option, but it is far from being the best one.”
