MULTI – MILLION POUND DEVELOPMENT TO SAVE LISTED BUILDING
A £9 Million scheme to create a new boutique hotel, restaurant and conference facilities on the site of the Wellington Rooms in Mount Pleasant has been submitted for planning approval today.
The building, known to many as the Irish Centre, has been identified as a problem by ‘stop the rot’ campaigners. Developers and site owners, Liverpool based company New Dimensions, say that their proposal is the only viable option to safeguard the long- term future of the grade ll star listed building.
A spokesman for New Dimensions said:
“ We have been negotiating with Liverpool City Council planners and other interested parties for almost two years now. We have been as patient as we possibly can be, and for the sake of this unique building it is imperative that our application is presented without further delay.
“ Our heritage adviser has told us that this is the ‘last chance saloon’ for the Wellington Rooms, and the scheme we have put together will not only secure the future of the building, but will generate £9 million of private sector investment, and create more than two hundred jobs.
“ Unlike other hotels that have been granted planning permission in recent months, we have already identified an end user, with a track record. The Flanagan Group, who have a first class reputation in the local leisure industry sector with the Sir Thomas Hotel and the Newz Bar among their many establishments, are committed to delivering this project with us.”
The spokesman concluded:
“ We are confident that we have addressed all of the issues put to us by English Heritage, Conservation and the planners. Bishop James Jones and the local M.P. Louise Ellman have welcomed our scheme, as have numerous local people who we have consulted with during the past two years. We anticipate a similarly positive response from members of the planning committee.”
