COUNCILLOR’S U-TURN ON BRUNSWICK QUAY BAFFLES DLIB
Positive comments from senior Members of Liverpool City Council in favour of Maro Developments proposals for a skyscraper development at Brunswick Quay last week, failed to result in a positive outcome, as Planning Committee Members rejected the application at a meeting today. Chairman of private sector lobby group Downtown Liverpool in Business (DLIB) Frank McKenna said he was disappointed and surprised by the decision. “Following the comments from the Chair of Planning, and the Executive Member for regeneration last week, I was hopeful that this excellent development would be approved. “ I know seven days is a long time in politics, but the change in attitude towards the scheme seems remarkable in such a short space of time. “I do think that this decision will dent confidence in the City with the wider business community and may put off potential inward investors of the future. The city cannot simply rely on the Paradise Street project to regenerate Liverpool, and we need more private sector driven schemes to maximize the opportunity ‘capital of culture’ has given us. This seemed an extremely attractive and suitable project for the city, and I am unconvinced by the arguments offered for refusal.” ENDS For further information contact Frank McKenna Tel. 0151 227 1633
