Capital of Culture Takes to the High Seas
Liverpool’s Capital of Culture message will be spread to the far corners of the UK and Europe thanks to Britain’s only creative touring theatre ship.
Walk the Plank will be flying the Capital of Culture flag for Liverpool as the ship hosts arts events, spectacular fireshows and community-based work on board an ex-Norwegian ferry, the Fitzcarraldo.
The ship comes to the city this week to officially launch the new partnership between Capital of Culture and Walk the Plank at a special event on Wednesday 8th September. After this, the ship will dock here during the winter months providing a venue for independent theatre and arts groups. The community can also have access to the ship as a venue for live music, workshops, club nights, events and performances.
Over the next four years the ship will tour around in accessible areas of the UK and Europe to engage with community groups and the general public to explain what Capital of Culture is all about for Liverpool.
Peter Glover, managing director of DLIB and on the board of directors for Walk the Plank, was instrumental in developing this project. Commenting on the benefits of the collaboration he said, “This is a fantastic initiative for Liverpool. Walk the Plank is a great venue for theatre and the arts and will be a great ambassador for the city. The Capital of Culture message will be spread across the UK and into Europe in a creative and accessible way.”
Maggie Barr from Capital of Culture Company said, “Walk the Plank was an opportunity too good to miss for us. It’s an innovative and different way we can talk about Capital of Culture and Liverpool, which also reflects the city’s seafaring heritage and the fact we like to do things a little differently!”
