INTRODUCTION
A belated happy new year to all Downtown members and supporters! Welcome to our first, business bulletin of 2008, the most momentous year in Liverpool’s modern history. And despite all the trials and tribulations at the culture company, the opening ceremony, and the weekend launch events, was suitably impressive, with the magnificent St.Georges Hall, the new arena and our magnificent waterfront all used imaginatively to showcase the city’s talents. Ringo Starr’s appalling ‘song’ aside, a big thumbs up for the organisers. In other (good) city news, Jim Gill has been given the job of leading Liverpool’s new regeneration company; DLIB has unveiled its most comprehensive events programme ever, and a new radio station is set to take the city by storm. Read on, enjoy, and have a great year…

JIM GETS THE CALL
After months of searching the UK and beyond for a Chief Executive for its new super quango, the city’s powers that be finally agreed with us, and persuaded Jim Gill to take on the role. Given that the new organisation has inherited the name of Jim’s old organisation, Liverpool Vision, it shouldn’t take him too long to settle in and get to grips with the challenges our city faces. Which, surely, is one of the reasons why he was always the best and most obvious choice all along?

SHOCK HORROR - BIG DIG EFFECTED CITY BUSINESSES
A survey conducted on behalf of the Liverpool Daily Post found that 80% of city centre users believe that businesses have suffered as a consequence of the ‘big dig’. The only surprise in this result is that 20% of those questioned were clearly walking around the city for the past three years permanently pissed! CLICK HERE for full story

LENNON HAD IT RIGHT ABOUT RINGO!
For those of you who got hot under the collar about Ringo Starr’s far from complimentary remarks about Liverpool on national television, a reminder of this famous quote from John Lennon.
