| Colin Hilton has been named as the new Chief Executive of Liverpool City Council. Mr. Hilton had been doing the job temporarily since the departure of Sir David Henshaw. Previously, he had been in charge of the city’s education department. Mr. Hilton’s first public utterings give us cause for optimism. He joined council Leader Warren Bradley, in calling for the abandonment of the proposed ‘tall buildings policy’. He also expressed his support for the Maro tower at Brunswick Quay and said that the council would be more business-friendly in the future. |

| What a shame that a minority of mindless thugs prevented Liverpool citizens from enjoying England’s World Cup games on the big screen in Downtown Liverpool. Congratulations for the city council for giving the initiative a go. What a pity their faith wasn’t repaid with the behaviour it deserved. And what a pity that, despite similar disturbances in other cities across the country, the national broadcast media and some broadsheets decided to focus their attention on the trouble in Liverpool. |

Everton Football Club are negotiating a move to a stadium outside of Liverpool’s city boundary. Across the park, spiralling costs and a threatened withdrawal of public sector subsidy means that the Reds chances of delivering a new ground anytime soon appear remote. Is it now time for a genuine debate to be held on these two footballing greats sharing a new stadium?

Last month we asked ‘Is the EU Commission right to end Objective One funding for Liverpool?’
Almost 60% of you voted YES, indicating that at least the private sector believes that Liverpool is ready to stand on its own two feet, after fourteen years of the European gravy train. |
