Welcome to the final DLIB business bulletin of 2005. And there is much to report this festive month. A new council leader, a campaign launched to give Liverpool an elected mayor, and a further illustration of English Heritage’s unhealthy influence over the city’s planners……

CAMPAIGN FOR MAYOR UP AND RUNNING

A campaign to give Liverpool a directly elected mayor has been launched, with the full support of DLIB Chairman Frank McKenna. The first task that needs to be completed if this position is to be created in the city is a petition of 17,500 signatures to force a referendum on the issue. If you are on the Liverpool electoral roll, and you support the idea of an elected mayor sign up here.

ENGLISH HERITAGE STRIKES AGAIN

The lie that World Heritage Status would not stifle development in the city was highlighted again this month with news that Central Regeneration’s Liverpool Central village plan is set for planning refusal due to an objection from English Heritage. Despite the £160 Million project receiving support from Liverpool Vision, English Partnerships and the North West Development Agency, planners have once again lined up with the heritage lobby, which arguably has more power in Liverpool than any other city. Why?

Answers on a postcard please! A special mention though for those loveable planners, who have cost Liverpool almost half a BILLION pounds worth of private sector investment this year alone, with refusals for Maro’s Brunswick Quay scheme (£120 m), Chieftains Lime Street project (£80 m), and now the probable rejection of the central village initiative. Bets are being taken on them reaching the BILLION mark by next Christmas.

NEW LEADER – NEW APPROACH?

Will things improve for the business community under the leadership of Warren Bradley? Certainly he is making the right noises, criticising the chaos that is the big dig, and declaring that elected Members will take power back from the unelected officials, headed by Chief Executive Sir David Henshaw. We wish Councillor Bradley the best of luck in his new post, and would suggest that the planning department may be a good place to start in terms of Members taking back control of our city’s future!

LAST MONTH’S POLL

Not a particularly happy Christmas message for Sir David Henshaw from DLiB members who participated in our November poll. Just under 90% of you think that the Chief Executive should join Mike Storey and resign his position from Liverpool City Council.

THE CHRISTMAS PARTY WITH ATTITUDE!

DLIB’s ‘sexy networking’ evening’s bowed out of 2005 in style, with a fashion show the centrepiece of an array of entertainment displayed at Cavern Walks during our ‘Christmas Party With Attitude’ evening. Steve McFarlane made the evening go with a swing with a wonderful range of musical gems, whilst the excellent Liverpool lager kindly provided by Cains really got people in the party mood. Thanks too for the help and support of Bardot, Paloma and Vivienne Westwood. Click here to see the party – and witness the ‘man in the mask’ and a rather embarrassed looking American of corporate sponsors TM3!

2006 – DLIB PRESENTS!

DLIB is already busy organising the MUST attend business events for next year. First up is the first ‘sexy networking’ evening at Sir Thomas Street Hotel on Thursday 26th January. In February we are at Goodison Park for an Audience With Everton Chief Executive Keith Wyness, and in March our first Liverpool Property Forum of the Year will feature Manchester City Council Leader Richard Leece as the keynote speaker. Click here for further details of these and other DLIB events for 06.
