The Forum of Private Business

The Forum of Private Business (FPB) was formed in 1977 and is a pressure group fighting on behalf of private businesses. FPB represents approximately 25,000 UK-based businesses employing in excess of 600,000 people, and is a powerful lobbying voice in both the UK and the European Union.

FPB, as the only full UK member of UEAPME – the organisation which represents small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Europe – is the most prominent advocate of UK SMEs in Brussels and has a track record of positively affecting legislation prior to its introduction in the UK.

FPB also provides a range of business services aimed at increasing member efficiency and profitability.

IoD

As a worldwide association of members, the Institute of Directors (IoD) provides a professional network that reaches into every corner of the business community. Our membership spans the whole spectrum of business leadership, from the largest public companies to the smallest private firms. Membership of the IoD is individual – each member joins the IoD in his or her capacity as a director. Members receive a variety of benefits including information, advice, training, conferences and publications to help them maximise their potential. They also have an influential organisation on their side – representing their concerns to government – and at their side – providing professional business support, wherever it is needed.

CBI

The CBI was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1965.

The ultimate governing body of the CBI is its Council, comprising a broad representation of its membership. In practice, the Council has delegated the majority of its decision-making powers to the Chairmen’s Committee and the CBI Board.

The CBI consults and supports its members through a regional organisation. Each of these 12 regions has a regional council elected from the members and is supported by CBI staff located locally. There are also 16 standing committees of the CBI charged with supporting specific areas of policy or members. Through this regional and standing committee structure the CBI is able to consult its members and involve them in policy formulation.

The Chairmen’s Committee (which has at least 10% of its members representing SMEs) is made up of the chairmen of the 12 elected regional councils and of the 16 standing committees. It takes the lead responsibility for setting the CBI’s position on all policy matters. It proposes to the annual general meeting of members a candidate for election as President of the CBI, and a candidate for Deputy President.
