Parr Street - Capital Gain or Culture Pain?
The owners of Parr Street Studios, musician Phil Collins and some of his former Genesis band members, have applied for planning permission to convert the building into residential apartments. The Liverpool studios that attracts acts such as Coldplay, New Order, The Charlatans and Pulp will face closure if planning permission is approved. Alongside the recording studios the building also houses a large and diverse cultural space 33 45. Owned by Liverpool legend Tom Lang and his partners, this group played a large role in 2003’s Capital of Culture bid submission. Tom is a cultural advocate for Liverpool and his commitment to the city is second to none.
Parr Street is a haven to a number of very successful creative businesses. These tenants have helped Merseyside create significant long term creative partnerships both nationally and internationally. In particular, 3345 has a creative membership exceeding 7000 and offers conference space for many high level seminars, workshops and product/business launches.
Downtown Liverpool in Business is gathering support for the retention of Parr Street Studios as a centre of excellence for Liverpool’s creative industries.
