A Museum of Popular Culture: DLIB Press Release‘

The following is a copy of a Press Release from Downtown Liverpool in Business released following the seminar, dated April 30th 2004.

DLIB Wants ‘POP’ Downtown’

Plans for a museum of popular culture in Liverpool are being backed by Downtown Liverpool in Business, the independent business agency that seeks to link the private and public sectors to realise maximum regeneration in the City.

The idea for a showpiece attraction on the waterfront to celebrate Liverpool’s contribution to music and popular culture was presented by television presenter Anthony Wilson at a conference of entrepreneurs, hosted by Downtown Liverpool in Business this week.

DLIB Chairman Frank McKenna commented: “This is a fantastic idea whose time has surely come. The ‘pop’ museum should be the focal point within the fourth grace. It would be a tremendous visitor attraction for 2008, and would not only celebrate Liverpool’s heritage, but its future too.

“There has been endless discussion and debate about the design of Will Allsopp’s cloud, but DLIB is more interested in what goes on in the building. Another traditional museum space, focussing on the Beatles and the past is not desirable. We want something that is modern, dynamic with an appeal to people of all generations.

“DLIB will be working alongside Tony Wilson to lobby the City’s policy and decision makers and get ’pop’ on the agenda.”

The museum, would cover a range of genres, including computer games, film, fashion, the motor car, comic books, television, sport and, of course, music. It would contain signature galleries in which individuals would share their own interpretation of popular culture, and there would be a main space that would hold regularly changing exhibitions.
